Columbia Pictures is making another attempt at cracking the code for "Jumanji 2" by returning to the original source. This time, they have optioned “Zathura,” an upcoming book by Chris Van Allsburg, the author of "Jumanji."
“Zathura” will be adapted into a screenplay by Eric Fogel, known for creating and executive producing MTV’s “Celebrity Deathmatch.” The new story takes place within an intergalactic board game, potentially found on the reverse side of the "Jumanji" board, as suggested by Van Allsburg in an online interview with Scholastic.
Unlike the 1995 hit, which brought a jungle-themed board game to life, “Zathura” promises a space adventure. Columbia has already spent millions and over six years trying to develop a sequel to “Jumanji.” One of their recent attempts included a seven-figure deal with Don Rhymer, the writer of “Big Momma’s House.”
Rhymer's project will continue in development, though it may become “Jumanji 3” if “Zathura” is chosen as “Jumanji 2.” Should Columbia decide to keep Rhymer’s project as “Jumanji 2,” “Zathura” would stand as its own independent title.
Columbia aims to establish a consistent franchise development path, similar to Warner Bros.' “Harry Potter” series. As “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” hits theaters, the sequel “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” is already in production.
Ted Field, principal of Radar Pictures, will serve as an executive producer for “Zathura.” Bill Teitler, along with Radar’s Erica Huggins and Scott Kroopf, will produce. Amy Baer, Columbia’s EVP of production, is overseeing both the Fogel and Rhymer projects.
Huggins expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “Chris Van Allsburg is a beloved writer, and his work translates perfectly to the screen. Fogel is the creative and dynamic force that can take this story and craft an incredible experience for moviegoers.”
Van Allsburg’s other works are also being developed for the screen. “The Widow’s Broom” is in development at Paramount Pictures, with Rob Minkoff set to direct. Additionally, Warner Bros. and Castle Rock are working on an adaptation of “The Polar Express.”
Eric Fogel is represented by the William Morris Agency.
